This picture was likely taken from an early edition of the Advertiser or the Chief - early 1900s. Alexis Coates, prominent in early Perry history, died January 21, 1943 at home in Des Moines; age 84. Born June 21, 1858 in Wisconsin; came to Perry in 1885. Taught school in Dallas and Guthrie counties, lived in Redfield and Minburn. Besides teaching he also farmed, had hardware, real estate, grocery businesses. Operated music store in Perry for twenty three years; sold it March 1905. Member of the Prohibition Party; was its candidate for governor in 1901 and for Vice President in 1904. Married twice, first to Margaret E. Riley in April 1885. She died in December 1922; later married Mrs. Belle Metcalf. |
